Description
The Vienna State Opera, often called the "First House on the Ring," is one of the world's most prestigious opera houses and embodies Vienna's deep connection to music, theater, and living cultural tradition like few others. Located directly on the Vienna Ring Road, it impresses with its Neo-Renaissance architecture as well as its extraordinary artistic radiance. Since its opening in 1869, it has stood for great voices, legendary conducting, and unforgettable stage moments. The renowned Viennese repertory system is particularly unique: unlike many international opera houses, productions here change almost daily. This remarkable diversity makes every visit a unique cultural experience and allows for an exceptionally broad repertoire – from Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner to Strauss and Puccini, as well as rarely performed works and contemporary productions.
With six opera and two ballet premieres, eight revivals, a children's performance, and the existing repertoire, a total of 46 different operas—over 60 works including ballets—are planned for the 2026/27 season at the Vienna State Opera. The premiere season kicks off with a double bill of Alexander Zemlinsky's *Eine florentinische Tragödie* and Béla Bartók's *Duke Bluebeard's Castle* (October 3). The first directorial highlight comes from Barrie Kosky, who will stage Richard Strauss's *Ariadne auf Naxos* (November 22). This will be followed by rarely performed works such as Berlioz's *La Damnation de Faust* (December 17) and Tchaikovsky's *The Queen of Spades* (March 15), as well as top-class classics: Anna Netrebko, for example, returns to the Vienna State Opera in the second run of Verdi's *Un ballo in maschera* (February 21). The season concludes with Vincenzo Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi (June 11) in a new interpretation by Tatjana Gürbaca.
The Vienna State Ballet brings John Neumeier's acclaimed Nijinsky (October 20) to Vienna – and Woolf Works (April 20), Wayne McGregor's spectacular creation about the life and work of Virginia Woolf.
The program is complemented by numerous revivals, including Macbeth (Giuseppe Verdi, September and October 2026), Madama Butterfly (Giacomo Puccini, November 2026), Manon Lescaut (Giacomo Puccini, April 2027), featuring Anna Netrebko, Carmen (Georges Bizet, October 2026 and April/May 2027), Der Rosenkavalier (Richard Strauss), and Don Carlo / Don Carlos (Giuseppe Verdi, Italian/French).
A distinctive feature of the Vienna State Opera remains its international cast. World-renowned stars and celebrated audience favorites will once again shape the 2026/27 season. Accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic, which evolved from the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, they create that unmistakable sound that makes the musical experience here so special.
