Description
The salt mines in Hallstatt, Hallein, and Altaussee are among Austria's most popular tourist destinations, offering a fascinating glimpse into the millennia-old history of salt mining. In Hallstatt, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dachstein–Salzkammergut, visitors enter the oldest salt mine in the world.
Prehistoric salt mining, an underground salt lake, and modern exhibits provide captivating insights into the 7,000-year-old tradition of salt extraction. The "Skywalk World Heritage View" observation platform, high above the town, complements the experience with one of the country's most iconic panoramas. Currently under construction in Hallstatt is a major future project: the world's most modern funicular railway, which will provide even more impressive access to the Hallstatt salt mountain starting in June 2026.
The Altaussee location combines one of Austria's most beautiful landscapes with a vibrant mining history. Besides the active salt mining and the tunnels of pure rock salt, the rescue of important European artworks from the Nazis during World War II is also a key focus here – a fascinating topic for cultural and sightseeing tours.
At the Salzburg Salt Mines in Hallein, ancient tunnels meet modern educational exhibits. A visit includes an underground journey through four important eras of salt mining. A ride on the mine train, miners' slides, and a raft trip across the salt lake are included. Right next to the site, the Celtic Village awaits with its demonstration saltworks, where traditional salt production is vividly presented. This combination makes Hallein particularly attractive for family and school programs.
Each destination has its own unique character and offers a diverse range of options for tour groups, families, and individual travelers.
