Description
Markus Sittikus von Hohenems was a bon vivant. Between 1612 and 1615, he built his country estate, Hellbrunn Palace. Sittikus wanted to create a place unlike any that had ever existed before. His focus wasn't so much on splendor and size, but rather on fantasy, originality, ingenuity, and a playful spirit. The famous Hellbrunn Water Features are a true spectacle that can still be experienced today much as they were over 400 years ago. Mystical grottoes, water-powered figures, and mischievous jets of water surprise visitors. A Mannerist toy for grown-ups. And yet, it's so much more: a unique cultural gem and a technical masterpiece.
The interactive permanent exhibition "SchauLust – The Unexpected World of Markus Sittikus" is a particular highlight. The palace interior impresses with walls adorned with fantastical and mythical creatures, illusionistic architectural paintings, frescoes, and magnificent tiled stoves. Some rooms can still be used for celebrations today.

Hellbrunn Palace Park is also a natural biotope: 60 hectares in size, with a children's playground, a water feature, a fitness trail, and, in winter (when there is sufficient snow), groomed cross-country ski trails. Hellbrunn Mountain invites visitors to a short hike with stops at the Stone Theater, the Watzmann Viewpoint, and the viewpoint overlooking the city of Salzburg. Below the city viewpoint, the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is housed in the Monatsschlössl, perched above the park.
