Albertina

Unique art enjoyment in the heart of Vienna
Albertina
Albertina

Description

It is a place to marvel at: the former residential palace, which now houses an art museum of international standing, gives an idea of the power and wealth of the Habsburgs. It is not for nothing that the ALBERTINA was named one of the seven “Urban Wonders of the World” in 2018: the house with its lavish, classicist state rooms is an attraction for travelers from all over the world. With its permanent exhibition “Monet-Picasso”, it offers an overview of the most exciting chapters from 130 years of art history that is unique in Vienna.

A diverse exhibition program with outstanding works of art from the 15th century to the present. With the special exhibitions “Albrecht Dürer”, “Edvard Munch”, “Raphael” and “Van Gogh”, the Albertina has recorded visitor records in recent years.

Monet to Picasso

The ALBERTINA has one of the most important collections of classical modern painting in Europe, the Batliner Collection. The starting point is Claude Monet and the artists of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism such as Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. Another focus is on German Expressionism with the artist groups Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter. The focus on Austrian art is deepened by works by Kokoschka, Klimt and Schiele as well as paintings by Egger-Lienz. The diversity of the Russian avant-garde is illustrated by paintings by Goncharova, Malevich and Chagall. Numerous works by Picasso form the crowning conclusion: from his early Cubist paintings to the mature works of the 1940s and outstanding, previously unexhibited prints to his experimental late work.

Honoré Daumier
6 February to 25 May 2026
The spring 2026 exhibition at the ALBERTINA Museum is dedicated to the French artist Honoré Daumier. For the first time, an exhibition is dedicated to his extensive oeuvre in Vienna. Supported by around 80 works on loan from the Städelscher Museums-Verein, it presents the Albertina's extensive collection in a new light with exhibits that have never been shown before. At the beginning of the 19th century, Paris is one of the most populous cities in Europe. The Great Revolution is over, Napoleon is dead and the political situation is unstable. With a keen eye and a sharp pen, Honoré Daumier fights on the front line. Committed to a republican ideal, his caricatures repeatedly fall victim to censorship, and his biting criticism of those in power even lands him in prison for several months. As much a chronicler as a commentator, Daumier gives as much space to the everyday as to big politics. Bathers and the art public, drinkers and jugglers populate his pictures and bear witness to the wit and acumen of an artist who held up an incorruptible mirror to his contemporaries. These works have lost none of their topicality to this day.

KAWS - ART & COMICS
3 April to 27 September 2026
In the 1990s, the American artist KAWS first became known for his graffiti. He painted over posters and adverts in public spaces and marked faces on posters with crossed-out eyes. These are now his trademark and adorn his oversized figurative sculptures. The exhibition at the ALBERTINA MODERN places KAWS in a dialogue with artists such as Keith Haring, Claes Oldenburg and many others. Comics are understood as a universal form of graphic storytelling and their interaction with positions in contemporary art is examined. Due to their universal codes, comic figures appeal to all age groups and social classes and guide us through the presentation.
