From Hallein in SalzburgerLand to Lake Hallstatt

The Salzalpensteig is a 250-kilometer cross-border hike that leads from the Chiemgau region through Berchtesgadener Land into the enchanting World Heritage region of Hallstatt.
An entire region is linked by name to salt – the Salzkammergut in Austria, which is also part of this fascinating hiking tour. The history of salt, from its extraction to the transport of this once expensive and sought-after commodity, accompanies hikers. Salt was once called "white gold"; its value is evident, for example, in the salt ration "salarium" that was part of the pay of Roman legionaries. The visitor mines, where you can witness the salt extraction process on site, are worth a visit. For centuries, salt deposits brought prosperity and cultural prosperity to the places concerned. Look forward to a journey against a wonderfully diverse natural backdrop with rushing waterfalls, shimmering lakes, and alpine trails.
