Your day trip begins with a trip to the world-famous Melk Abbey, one of the most important and magnificent Baroque buildings in Europe. Perched high above the Danube, the Benedictine monastery impresses not only with its majestic location in the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also with its artfully designed architecture and richly decorated interiors. On an expertly guided tour of the abbey, you will experience Baroque architecture in its purest form. You will visit, among other things, the magnificent abbey church with its magnificent dome, the impressive library with thousands of historical volumes, and the Marble Hall with its artistic frescoes. During the tour, you will learn fascinating background information about the history of the monastery, which has been an important spiritual and cultural center of the region for over 900 years. After the tour, a leisurely lunch awaits you in the Melk Abbey Restaurant.
After refreshing, you will set off in the afternoon for a scenic drive along the Danube through the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage Site. In winter, the landscape reveals its most atmospheric side: snow-covered vineyards stretch along the hills, medieval castles and palaces greet you from the heights, and small villages with historic house facades lie enchantingly in the valley.
Your destination for the day is Krems an der Donau, one of Austria's oldest cities. Here, you'll visit the Krems Caricature Museum, the only museum in Austria dedicated entirely to caricature, satire, and critical drawing. On an entertaining guided tour, you'll learn about the works of renowned artists such as Manfred Deix, Gustav Peichl ("Ironimus"), and Erich Sokol. At the end of the day, a guided wine tasting awaits you, where you'll sample some of the finest wines of the Wachau region. Small, fine regional specialties will be served with these – an enjoyable conclusion to a diverse cultural day filled with Baroque, satire, and wine.
